Claus’ chair is designed for Swedish furniture manufacturer – Stolab in a project that I attended in HDK, Steneby in 2017. The design brief is to present a sitting furniture that is tailor-made for Stolab to extend its products and connect to the brand. Based on my analysis, I designed this lounge chair as to Stolab’s brief - “Participations over generations.” Claus’ chair is a fireside chair for family members to gather and share their stories. Inspired by the imagery of Santa Claus’ chair during the Christmas, it serves for Santa Claus and allows kids to tell him what they’ve done in the year and ask for presents.

It is a modified wing chair without heavy upholstery due to Stolab’s production resources. The highlight of the chair is the alternative cushion which is removeable and can be produced individually. The chair is characterised with wide armrests to be used as extra seats for kids and rooms for placing objects. Welcoming wings on the seatback invite sitters lean on and provide an intimacy to the user. The experimental joint designed for the chair allow the cushions to be mounted smoothly with the grooves and rods. The possibility of being removed and re-upholstered on the cushions is the main response to the brief – being possible to modify so to pass over generations.
